An Overview of the Early Reading Program

Halifax Learning Centre’s Early Reading Program is a reading failure prevention program that provides explicit and direct instruction to Pre- Primary and Primary students in phonemic awareness, phonemic decoding, spelling, reading fluency, comprehension, and writing.

The Program is delivered to students before they might acquire or solidify inefficient compensatory reading strategies. Students are introduced to reading using intensive techniques that emphasize efficient phonological skills development, rather than memory or rhyming. Students are also specifically taught how to engage their conversation language abilities when reading and writing.

The primary difference with the Early Reading Program students is that they have not started to use compensatory reading strategies. This means that our Early Reader’s program can use real words sooner, facilitating the transfer of phonological skills to the reading process.

At Halifax Learning Centre we offer specially tailored full and part-time programs throughout HRM. Call us today for your free assessment and more information on how we can help you or your child.
