Many of our post-secondary students report that school work takes them three times longer than it should, as they often need to read and re-read their text books in order to understand the material. Many students have complained of difficulties retaining information, putting thoughts articulately down on paper, and dealing with essay-style questions, exams, and verbal reasoning.
SpellRead can give you the ability to read fluently, which frees you up to focus on the content. You will find that you can retain the main points at the first reading, so the time you spend processing the information decreases significantly.
SpellRead is specific, organized and detailed. It focuses on developing students' phonological automaticity as well as their comprehension skills. The program's power and effectiveness has been demonstrated through concrete results both in clinics and in the classroom.
The process for post-secondary students starts with an in-depth reading skills assessment. This takes less than an hour and assesses phonological processing, word decoding, word identification, spelling, reading fluency and comprehension. This assessment helps us to group post-secondary students according to skill level, which in turn allows us to better suit their specific needs. We also group according to academic discipline, so that science students can work with science students, law students with law students, and so on. This format allows us to connect actual core class content to the student's SpellRead program.
In the past 10 years, SpellRead has helped close to 2000 students in HRM develop excellent reading skills, and over 5000 students throughout North America.

Comprehensive Instructional Cycle
SpellRead combines effective reading instruction with a proven delivery method. This intensive intervention model is designed for groups of up to six students with one certified teacher or paraprofessional.
Instructional cycle:
• Linguistic Foundations builds automaticity with scaffolded phonics and phonemic awareness activities.
• Active Reading supports students’ fluency through oral-reading practice using trade books and leveled readers.
• Writing Connections develops students’ ability to turn oral language into written language.
