[Eryn Steele](https://www.halifaxlearning.com/blog/author/eryn-steele) Aug 18, 2026 --- Halifax Learning was founded over 25 years ago with a mission to help struggling readers access the skills they needed to succeed. Over that time, we have worked with thousands of students and trained countless educators across Atlantic Canada. A lot has changed in that time, but some important things have not. ## **What Has Changed: The Science Is Clearer** Twenty-five years ago, the debates about how reading should be taught were fierce and often more ideological than empirical. Today, the science of reading has reached a level of consensus that is hard to argue with. Neuroimaging research, cognitive science, and large-scale reading studies have converged on a clear picture: reading must be explicitly taught, phonological skills are foundational, and structured approaches produce better outcomes for more students. ## **What Has Changed: The Conversation Has Reached Classrooms** When Halifax Learning was founded, structured literacy was known mainly in specialist circles. Today, it is entering the mainstream. Provinces across Canada are updating literacy curricula, training teachers in evidence-based approaches, and moving away from practices like three-cueing that research does not support. This shift has been decades in the making, and it is exciting! ## **What Has Not Changed: Students Still Fall Through the Cracks** Despite progress, many students still arrive at junior high or high school without the foundational reading skills they need. Assessment and intervention remain inconsistent. Families with resources can access support; families without them often cannot. The gap between what the research tells us is possible and what struggling students actually receive remains far too wide. ## **What We Carry Forward** Our work at Halifax Learning is shaped by everything we have learned over 25 years, from the students who taught us what good instruction looks like in practice, from the families who trusted us with their children, and from the researchers and practitioners who have expanded the field.
