Here's a practical checklist to help you set your child up for the strongest possible start to the school year. ## **Before School Starts** Review last year's report card and any assessment results you have. Are there specific areas of concern that were identified? What support was recommended? Having this information front of mind helps you ask the right questions at the start of the year. If your child is entering a new school or grade, consider reaching out to the new teacher before classes begin to share relevant background information. Early communication helps teachers plan appropriately from day one. ## **In the First Few Weeks** Pay attention to your child's emotional state around reading. Are they avoiding reading activities? Coming home frustrated or deflated? These are signals worth taking seriously. It's also worth asking early, 'What are you reading in school? Do you find it easy or hard?' Establish a consistent reading routine at home right from the start of September. Even 10-15 minutes daily makes a difference! Starting early means it becomes a habit before the school year gets busy. ## **If Concerns Emerge** Don't wait until the winter report card to act on concerns. If your child is showing signs of struggle in the first weeks, request a meeting with the teacher.
