But a good literacy assessment is not a test to pass or fail. It's a tool for understanding, and it's the foundation of effective support. Here's what to expect. ## **Before the Assessment** Most literacy assessments begin with an intake process: gathering background information from parents, reviewing school reports, and understanding the family's concerns and goals. This context helps the assessor interpret results meaningfully. It's helpful to gather any previous assessment reports or report cards before your appointment. ## **During the Assessment** A comprehensive literacy assessment typically includes tasks assessing phonological awareness (hearing and manipulating sounds), phonics and decoding skills (reading real and made-up words), oral reading fluency, spelling, and reading comprehension. Some assessments also include measures of rapid naming and working memory. The session is designed to be engaging and non-threatening. Most students feel comfortable once they realize there are no trick questions. ## **How Long Does It Take?** A thorough literacy assessment generally takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the student's age and the scope of the assessment.
