Automaticity is built through structured, repeated practice over time, not a handful of lessons.** It's a fair question, and one we hear often once a family has decided structured literacy is the right path: H*ow long is this going to take?* The honest answer is longer than most one-off tutoring arrangements, and that's actually the point. ## Why reading skills can't be "fixed" quickly Learning to read fluently means turning a slow, effortful process of sounding out each letter and blending sounds into words into something automatic. That shift from effortful decoding to automatic word recognition is what researchers call automaticity, and it doesn't happen through a few lessons on a skill. It happens through structured, cumulative practice, repeated consistently until the brain no longer has to work hard to do it. A child can learn a phonics rule in a single session. Being able to *apply it automatically*, without thinking, while also holding onto the meaning of what they're reading can take sustained practice over weeks and months. ## What a structured literacy program actually looks like Unlike a homework-help session, a structured literacy program follows a defined arc: 1. **Assessment.** Instruction starts by identifying exactly which skills are missing and which are secure, so no time is wasted teaching what a child already knows. 2. **A sequenced curriculum.** Skills are introduced in an order that builds on itself: phonological awareness, then decoding, then fluency, then more advanced skills like morphology, with enough repetition at each stage that it sticks. 3. **Regular, consistent sessions.** Progress depends on frequency and consistency, not intensity in isolated bursts. Missing weeks or spacing sessions too far apart slows the automaticity-building process significantly. 4. **Ongoing progress monitoring.** Skills are checked regularly against benchmarks, so instruction adjusts as a child grows rather than following a fixed script regardless of progress. 5. **A defined endpoint.** A program has a beginning and, eventually, an endpoint at which a child's skills are secure enough that they no longer need intervention-level support. ## What this means for your family's expectations Committing to a program, rather than a session here and there, means: - **Progress may feel slow at first.** Foundational skills often take the longest to build, even though they show the least visible progress early on. That investment pays off later, when fluency and comprehension start to climb faster than expected. - **Consistency matters more than intensity.** Two structured sessions a week for six months will typically outperform daily cramming for two weeks before a report card. - **You'll see real markers along the way.** A good program tracks measurable progress: not just "How did today's session go?" but concrete benchmarks that show a child's skills are actually shifting. ## Why this approach is worth the commitment An alternative like patching gaps session by session without a structured plan tends to produce short bursts of improvement that don't hold. A child might do better on this week's spelling test, but the underlying decoding weakness is still there next month, and the month after. A program addresses the root skill, not just the current assignment, which is why the gains tend to last well beyond the program itself.
