Multisyllabic words, academic vocabulary, and complex texts require more than phonics; they require morphological knowledge. Teaching students to understand the structure and meaning of words is one of the highest-leverage literacy investments we can make. ## **What Is Morphology and Why Does It Matter?** Morphology is the study of meaningful word parts, or morphemes. These include base words, prefixes, suffixes, and roots derived from Latin and Greek. A student who understands that 'bio' means 'life' and 'logy' means 'study of' can unlock the meaning of biology, biography, biochemistry, and many, many other words without having seen them before. ## **When Should Morphology Instruction Begin?** Morphology instruction can begin early. Even kindergartners can learn that adding -s makes a word plural, or that un- means 'not.' As students move through elementary school, instruction can deepen to include derivational suffixes, base words, and eventually Latin and Greek roots. By middle school, morphological knowledge becomes essential for academic language. ## **What Does Effective Morphology Instruction Look Like?** Effective morphology instruction is explicit. Teachers can name the morpheme, define it, and show it in multiple words. It's also cumulative, building in complexity over time. Students should have opportunities to analyze real words, sort by morpheme, construct new words, and connect morphological knowledge to their reading and writing.
