From Assessment to Intervention: Our Clinic Process Explained

Families often come to Halifax Learning with a lot of questions: How does it work? What happens first? How long will it take? Here is a clear walkthrough of our clinic process, from your first contact to active intervention.
Step 1: Initial Consultation
Every client journey begins with a conversation. We talk with parents about their concerns, their child's history with reading, and what has or hasn't worked before. This gives us context before any formal assessment begins, and it helps families understand what to expect.
Step 2: Reading Assessment
A Halifax Learning assessment evaluates the full range of foundational reading skills: phonological awareness, phonics knowledge, decoding accuracy and fluency, spelling, and reading comprehension. We use standardized measures alongside informal assessment tasks to build a complete picture of where a student's skills are strong and where the gaps lie.
Step 3: Results and Recommendations
After assessment, we meet with families to share results and recommendations. We explain what we found in plain language, what it means for instruction, and what a program would look like for their specific child. Families leave this meeting with a clear understanding of next steps.
Step 4: Structured Literacy Intervention
Students begin their program with a Halifax Learning specialist who has been matched to their needs and learning profile. Sessions are typically 60-90 minutes, held multiple times per week. Progress is monitored regularly, and instruction is adjusted as students move through the skill sequence.
Step 5: Ongoing Communication
We communicate with families regularly throughout intervention, sharing progress data, celebrating milestones, and adjusting plans as needed. For school-aged students, we are also happy to liaise with classroom teachers and school teams.
